UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

The College of Engineering offers Bachelor of Sciences degrees in the following major programs: Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science.

Each of the curricula offered by the College of Engineering provides a fundamental science-oriented university education with coverage of communications, the humanities, and social sciences, as well as the basic physical sciences of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The curricula also encompass engineering sciences common to all engineering disciplines and project courses that introduce the engineering method of design.

General Education and College Requirements

Course work in each curriculum consists of a set of required courses common to all engineering majors and additional courses to satisfy departmental requirements. The courses required of all engineering students, which also satisfies the General Education Core Requirements of UH Mānoa, consist of the following credits:

Written Communication (FW)

  • ENG 100 – Composition I (3 credits) (FW) or other approved FW course

Arts, Humanities and Literature (DA, DH, DL)

  • SP 251 – Principles of Effective Public Speaking (3 credits) (DA)
  • One elective (3 credits) (DH or DL)

Social Sciences (DS)

  • One of ECON 120, ECON 130, or Econ 131(DS)
    • ECON 120 – Introduction to Economics (3 credits)
    • ECON 130 – Principles of Microeconomics (3 credits)
    • ECON 131- Principles of Macroeconomics (3 credits)
  • One elective (3 credits) (DS, non-Econ), must be a DS designated course from a subject outside of Economics

 Global and Multicultural Perspectives (FG)

  • Two approved FG electives (6 credits)
FG courses are classified into 3 groups (A, B, or C). Students select two to take with each one being from a different group. If students take two from the same group only one will count towards fulfilling the FG requirement.

Quantitative Reasoning (FQ)

  • MATH 241 – Calculus I (4 credits) (FQ) or Math 251A – Accelerated Calculus I (4 credits) (FQ)
  • MATH 242 – Calculus II (4 credits) or Math 252A – Accelerated Calculus II (4 credits)
  • MATH 243 – Calculus III (3 credits) or Math 253A – Accelerated Calculus II (4 credits)
  • MATH 244 – Calculus IV (3 credits) or [none, if successfully completed Math 253A]

 Natural Sciences (DP, DY, DB)

  • CHEM 161/161L, and 162 General Chemistry/Lab (3/1/3 credits) (DP/DY)
    or CHEM 171/171L Principles of Chemistry/Lab (4/1 credits) (DP/DY)
  • PHYS 170/170L General Physics I/Lab (4/1 credits)
  • PHYS 272/272L General Physics II/Lab (3/1 credits)
  • DB is waived/not required for engineering majors (CE and CNST majors have a engineering requirement that happens to be a DB)

Focus Requirements (H, E, O, W)

Additionally, a student must complete the Focus Graduation Requirements:

  • 1 – Hawaiian, Asian, Pacific Issues focus course (H or HAP)
  • 1 – Ethics focus course (E or ETH)
  • 1 – Oral Communication focus course (O or OC)
  • 5 – Writing Intensive focus courses (W or WI)
  • The Hawaiian/Second Language focus (HSL) is waived/not required for the engineering degree programs.

Bachelor of Science Engineering Degree Requirements

The undergraduate curricula are designed to be completed in eight semesters. In order to attain a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, a student must adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Complete the course work for one of the engineering curricula, which also satisfies all UH Mānoa requirements;
  2. Maintain a minimum UHM overall GPA of 2.0 for all registered UHM courses; and
  3. Maintain a minimum Engineering Major GPA of 2.0 for all upper division UHM courses (numbered 300-499) in mathematics, science, and engineering.

Curriculum Check Sheets

See appropriate curriculum check sheet below for specific engineering major program requirements. The curriculum check sheets list all university general education requirements, college requirements, and engineering major requirements for each college of engineering undergraduate program in the recommended/required order.

Academic Progress Requirements (Good Standing/Probation/Suspension/Dismissal)

Undergraduate engineering students are subject to the policies of academic probation, suspension, and dismissal of UH Mānoa as specified in the UHM Catalog.

In addition to UH Mānoa requirements, engineering students are required to maintain the 2.0 or higher in both the overall UHM GPA and engineering major GPA for Good Standing. If either the overall or major GPA falls below a 2.0, the student will be placed on academic probation. While on probation, the student must then maintain a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher for each probationary semester to continue. Failure to meet any of the above conditions may result in suspension or dismissal.

Suspended students may not take courses for one semester at UH Mānoa and must reapply for admission through the UH Mānoa Admissions (as a returning/transfer applicant) within specified deadlines for the semester of return. Students who do NOT take courses after being suspended for the required one semester are eligible to be readmitted to the College of Engineering. Suspended students who attend another institution (including other UH system campuses) will be considered “transfer” students when reapplying to UH Mānoa and must meet the transfer requirements of the College of Engineering to be re-accepted.

Dismissed students will not be able to take any courses at UH Mānoa for one year and will need to reapply to return. After being dismissed, the student is encouraged to take courses at the community colleges to show a history of academic success before reapplying to UH Mānoa. Usually the student is not re-accepted to engineering but may appeal for readmission to an engineering major through the College of Engineering by emailing the CoE Student Academic Services (SAS) Office at engr@eng.hawaii.edu.
