Holmescoming provides a night of connection for Hawai‘i’s engineering community

With Dayna Nemoto-Shima and Brandon Shima at the helm of the planning committee, this year’s Holmescoming on October 18 delivered an evening filled with exceptional food, drinks, and lively fun.

Seasoned alumni mingled with students, sharing hard-earned insights about careers in engineering and offering guidance for the next generation.

Chef DK Kodama–a celebrated figure in Hawai‘i’s culinary world–with special guests; Chef Ernesto of Prime Roast Café, Chef Fred D’Angelo of Bubbly and Bleu, and Lane Muraoka & Jody Franks of Big City Diner added a flavorful touch with a menu that kept conversations flowing and plates full throughout the night.

The evening’s atmosphere was elevated by the live music of alum and premier slack key guitarist George Kuo with Keith Kalani Cockett on bass, and The Stick and Barrel Band featuring BK Espiritu, Marky Marquez, and alum Hernan Co.

Dean Brennon Morioka captured the spirit of the event, stating, “Holmescoming underscores the power of connection. It’s moments like these that remind us how vital our alumni are to the success of our students and the future of the College.”

True to Holmescoming tradition, the evening celebrated both the past and the future, with friendships rekindled and new connections formed over good food and shared stories. As the night wound down, it was a reminder that the strength of UH’s engineering community lies not just in its achievements, but in the relationships it forges.
